[The journal clicks on accidentally. Knocked over by an orange cat desperate for the tuna that’s been set out for her by a tattooed hand. The book falls to the ground, and footsteps walk away uncaring across Sanji’s kitchen floor. It doesn’t show anything more.
But, if you listen, the faint strains of a song can be heard, coming from far away (upstairs). The lyrics could be interpreted as a party tune, but the singer clearly means it as a requiem.]
Yo-hohoho, Yohohohoo,
Yo-hohoho, Yohohohoo,
Yo-hohoho, Yohohohoo,
Yo-hohoho, Yohohohoo,
Going to deliver Binks' Sake!
Following the sea breeze! Riding on the waves!
Far across the salty depths! The merry evening sun!
The birds sing as they draw circles in the sky!
Farewell to the harbor, To my old hometown
Lets all sing out with a Don! As the ship sets sail
Waves of gold and silver dissolve to salty spray
As we all set sail to the ends of the sea
[To the ends of the sea. They sail now, chasing that far horizon. Raftel. One Piece.
Law leans against Brook’s former door (his father in Luceti Valley) before sweeping Zoro’s old room (his grandson) and finding one hidden bottle left. He raises it in salute before breaking it open. Franky’s room (there’s a hammer in the middle of the floor), Ussop’s room has a couple of rubber bands. Chopper’s room has bandaids. Ace and Bellemere’s former room smells like fire and gunpowder and cigarettes.
Mister Strawhat’s room (his rival, his equal) has brass elephants, an old rib bone, and a piece of straw resting on the pillow.
He goes back downstairs.]
Going to deliver Binks' Sake!
We are pirates sailing through the Sea!
The waves are our pillows, The ship our roost
Flying the proud skull on our flags and our sails
[This is not supposed to be a sad thing. It’s not. But it aches full of regret and nostalgia just the same.
Something is passing. A new wind is blowing. The age is turning.
Once upon a time they had been family. They had always been rivals. One day allies, probably one day enemies, driven to it by the one thing that called them all. Who knew… maybe one day they would be friends. It had seemed possible here.
But what would be, would be. Would it be what Law wanted then, so fresh to Luceti’s soil?
Maybe. It wouldn’t be what he wanted now.]
Now comes a storm through the far-off sky
Now the waves are dancing, Beat upon the drums
If you lose your nerve this breath could be your last
But if you just hold on, The morning sun will rise
[Nami’s room (his granddaughter in law) has something glittering gold in it, and a hair ribbon. He doesn’t touch them. Vivi’s has a dry breeze and the faint scent of perfume.]
Yo-hohoho, Yo-hohoho,
Yo-hohoho, Yo-hohoho,
Yo-hohoho, Yo-hohoho,
Yo-hohoho, Yo-hohoho
[Robin’s room has books. Many books.
And a ring. An engagement ring.
Law’s eyes travel in the direction of CH3, and then to the ring.
To what he must personally do.]
Going to deliver Binks' Sake!
Today, and tomorrow, our dreams through the night!
Waving our goodbyes, we'll never meet again!
But don't look so down, For at night the moon will rise!
[Sanji’s (his nephew) has letters. At that point he starts and glances up. For a moment he thinks there’s someone sitting on the roof.
It’s new feather season. Perhaps some eternal wandering soul is resting up there before moving on.
He takes the letters, going through the names to which he needs to deliver them.
If there is one for him? This is where he reads it.]
Going to deliver Binks' Sake!
Let's all sing it with a Don! A song of the waves
Doesn't matter who you are, Someday you'll just be bones
Never-Ending, Ever-wandering, Our funny Traveling tale!
[It’s time to go. They’re all gone, for now.
Wait.
He stops in the living room. Walks to a wall. One more thing…]

I’m sorry to inform you that Sanji, Miss Robin, and Miss Vivi have left Luceti and now we’re absent the Strawhat crew. Sanji left letters for some of you. I’ll be delivering them tomorrow. Wish them good sailing.
And I have a favour to ask one of his good friends on behalf of him. His cat Pumpkin needs someone to care for her. Would one of you mind taking her in?
[And then it’s done and there’s nothing left for him in the house. Nothing but memories and ghosts of the pirates who lived there.]
See you in the New World.
[The journal clicks off. Law shuts the door, and carries Pumpkin and the letters out, past the mikan and sakura trees planted out from, to House 22, then CH3, then the bar. Leaves House 6 behind.
… leaves it behind with the Strawhat flag finally flying high outside.]

There must be some mistake, because Sanji can't be gone.]

[That's what it means to be the phoenix.]
[He has to carry on when no one else can.]
[Where no one else can go.]
[He doesn't want to go down and see her room vacant.]
[He's glad she's home. She's with her nakama. She's home. She'll be happy.]
[He has a promise.]
[A promise, a vow, as sacred as his tattoo. Did she know that was why he wanted a tattoo to symbolize her? And one for Ace for the same reason.]
[Law.]
[He needs to talk to him. They're almost all they have left now, but Marco can't bring himself to move. Can't bring himself to pull out of the hybrid form on the rooftop. The first month he was in Luceti he had lived as gargoyle, sitting on rooftops, mourning his father, mourning Ace, confused by Blackbeard, confused by this new strange world. He had a place here. A family. But it was just like back home. Some day they would all go, of course they would.]
[Marco can't believe how happy he is that she's gone. He thought it would hurt so much more, but it doesn't. He really had been telling her the truth when he said he would never regret the chances he took with her, only the times he didn't take that chance. The only thing that fills Marco's heart with sorrow is that he didn't have more time, more chances, more days to fill blindingly with her smiles and her love. More days to make her laugh, to better understand the Rookie crew that was going to change the new Era, the post-Whitebeard era.]
Arigatou, eh? Arigatou.
[Thank you Ace. Ace for making him bold. Ace for making him willing to take the risks. Robin for being there, for letting him take those risks and staying by his side. Sanji for tolerating his antics despite how protective of the crew he was, Nami for her every memory: orange hair, mikan, the harvests, the windmills, Brook for being the only old person in the village to talk to and for automatically embracing Marco as a friend, Zoro for doing his best, Vivi for... So many things. Flights, conversations, Vivi had been like a summer breeze that helped Marco find new heights. Vivi had been more like a little sister than he'd realized until just now.]
[He needed to thank Law too... as soon as he could move.]
[Action Rooftop!]
He sees blue flames from his spot on the ground when he pauses on his way to brush aside a stray bit of hair that's gotten loose from under his hat.
Marco already knows. He doesn't need Haki to sense it.
It won't make this easier.
So he quietly enters the building, climbs the flight of stairs, and sits beside Marco silently, supportive. What can they do, really.
It is what it is.
It's Luceti.]

Have they? I suppose that's good, they'd want to leave together and now they're all home.
If no one is able to take care of Pumpkin I'll be able to. [He can still remember the day that little orange cat became Sanji's. She had been so small back then and had only been living next door.]

[Horrendously painful is the word. It gets better but the ache doesn't go away.]
I'll let you know how it works out, alright? For tonight, Pumpkin is staying with me. I don't think it would be good if she was moved around too much right now.

But she doesn't listen to that nagging voice, she barely ever does. Besides, in an empty apartment room, an empty floor, the song is the only thing that fills the void. Her eyes close, and by the time Law actually begins to speak, she knew. It was obvious, but it still didn't make the ache any weaker. Vivi, too? And...Sanji. Sanji. Stupid man. Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid!
She's so stupid.
Perona grits her teeth and finally chokes out a sob into her journal, fingers digging into her arms by now. Gone. All of them. And she didn't even get to say goodbye to them! Selfish, thoughtless, cruel...stupid! Why did she even give a damn about any of them to begin with?!
Shaking her head furiously, tears running down her face, Perona holds her head in her hands and begins to cry, her sobs now the only sound filling the emptiness. She wishes Mihawk was here, just so she could have someone. Someone to go to. But he's gone, too. Just like everyone else. Everything else. Always gone.
Her cries get louder before she curls up a moment and can't take it anymore. Swatting her journal away, Perona races out her room, out her apartment, just out. It's too empty now.]
[Nothing]
Law's eyes grow distant as he recalls a Christmas Eve in his kitchen, walking in to catch Sanji and Perona locked in a passionate embrace, and not because of mistletoe. The way they had been going at it made the pirate wonder admist his if they would come up air...
Let her grieve him. Let her have time alone.
He looks at the letters.
He'll see her tomorrow.]

[Aang felt a sinking in his heart. It felt like just the other day when he was at Nami's birthday party and met most of those wacky Straw Hat pirates. Katara always had good things to say about them. And Vivi had been such a good friend to Ikki. She called her a sister. And Sanji had been so nice to them too, even if he may never have found out what girl he was giving Aang advice for.
It had hurt a lot when Luffy and Nami had gone home. And now there's more of a pain. With at least one of them around, there could have been hope that the rest could show up. But now it felt like Luceti was a little emptier - devoid of one source of some of the goofiest smiles. The pirates back home had disappointed his expectations; they were grimy criminals rather than the free-spirited adventurers that he admired when he heard stories of them. The Straw Hats... They lived up to that admiration and exceeded it. He could only hope and believe that they were back home, making their dreams come true.
Being happy, and free of this world.]

Vivi. One of the first people he met when came to Luceti - and one of the people who seemed to remember his previous stay most fondly. He had really enjoyed spending time with her and trying to rebuild a friendship that was threatened by his lack of previous Luceti memories. But Vivi was so fun to hang around with that after some initial awkwardness, it hadn't felt like much of a burden at all. Now Kurt only wishes he could have held onto that friendship more. Now she's the one who's gone, and he's the one left here. With her could go the last memories of a precious friendship that Kurt himself has no way of remembering.]
I'm sorry to hear that. Vivi's been a great friend. Things are - okay with her back home? [She seems to give the impression that all was well at home whenever they talked about it. Still, Kurt himself did a good job of covering up that he was facing the threat of Apocalypse in his own home.]
[Voice]
I assure you she's safe. Healthy.
[Is she happy?
Law doesn't know.
She's in her country but separated from her nakama.
It must be difficult.
So he can't answer that. If Vivi is happy.
All he can do is tell him she's alive and safe and healthy. It will have to do.]

And when they disappeared, one sometimes could feel that maybe along the way they had forgotten just how fleeting it all could be.
Nami and Sanji had both been good friends. The others she was less familiar with, but it still seemed poignant all the same. That group had been together for so long.
She still wasn't completely used to the former being gone - not with the way she sometimes would disappear from the village anyway, but then turn up unexpectedly, but it had already been months now, since her last stay. And Sanji ... it was funny, how they had only really just started building a real friendship, after all those years of knowing one another as more acquaintances at best. The cooking lessons had really started it off, his inadvertently coming to her rescue a few times, the time they spent in the little flower patch where they both remembered Ginko, and Sayo, and it had already been months since then as well.
She would go there today, at some point: it just seemed fitting to do so.]
... thank you for letting us know.
[voice]
[Second longest now. The Marine now held the title of being in here the longest. Law was the next, being in Luceti for over two and a half years.
... so fleeting. Sanji and the others had been a constant for him since the day he woke up in Luceti's mountains in the dead of winter. And now? Gone.
Until they come again.
It is not a sad thing, he finds. He's homesick, wistful, nostalgic, regretful, resigned, and aching in turns... but not really sad.
It is Luceti, after all.]

Still, he will remain a room or a message away, depending. If the pirate says the word, he'll be there.
And at the end of the day, if all Law needs in a pair of comforting arms, then he can provide that too. Despite how it may sometimes seem, Itachi is not unaffected by loss, and he wouldn't expect anyone else to be either.
At some point in the near future, they will have to visit the shrine together.]

Before he leaves again, he sags against the door frame and mutters:]
Now the hard part. Telling Mister Marco his fiance is gone.
[He leaves and isn't back till later, with the scent of alcohol clinging to his clothes. Not drunk (Law rarely is... his tolerance is immense) but it's clear that one pirating tradition has been well observed.
He's emotionally done. He's carried out his self imposed duties - informed the village, made the arrangements for Pumpkin, told Marco, and it isn't over yet. Tomorrow he'll have to confront Perona. He has to distribute the letters and deal first hand with people's grief. It's already been so messy with Richard.
He isn't sad. Homesick, wistful, nostalgic, regretful, resigned, aching, pained, and now afraid in turns. The people of his world washed in in droves like the tide, and now they're washing out. How many more will go? Will he be left completely alone, the last member of his world, like he's been for so long the only member of the Heart Pirates. Will he go and leave Itachi alone. He doesn't want that. He doesn't want to have it end like that.
But there's no choice and what will be will be. He can't change a second of it. He can only accept and try to handle it with as much grace as he can.
He is done.
He is tired.]
Oi. Sorry I'm back so late.
[There's a worn, world weary quality to his voice, as he then silently moves to embrace Itachi. It's tighter than normal.

But Sanji was clearly a friend of Law's, and it's for that reason alone that he gives even the slightest damn about all of this. Knowing Law, he shouldn't be that hard to find.
Which is why it won't be long before Gai takes a seat next to Law at the bar, a bottle of good sake in one hand and a pair of glasses in the other. He might've sweet-talked it out of the current bartender.]
[Action]
Or that's what he should be doing. It's the traditional pirate sendoff to have a party and get drunk.
Funny thing is, he finds he doesn't much want to do it alone, even though the desire is there and demanding. He's been trying to get better about his drinking. He's been using it as a crutch. But right now he doesn't much care about that part. Just the need for alcohol and the lack of company.
So he sits at the bar and tells the bartender to hold off for a moment while he figures what he wants. In truth, he's waffling because at a deeper level, he doesn't know what he wants anymore, and the shock of the day and the emotional roller coaster he's been riding as he deals with other people's grief isn't helping and is in fact driving in the point. He's tired.
In fact he doesn't want to make a decision at all right now, and it's merciful that not too long after Gai slides up with the sake and the glasses.]
Thank you.

Now then... Down. Down we go.
[The giant owl twitters noisily at his command, walking on over to the edge of the rooftop before hopping off. Gliding down to the street wouldn't be too difficult.
As long as there weren't any passersby to get stepped on.]

... oh, there a giant owl landing. Best get out of its way.
It's not until it's landed on the road and Law's sitting on his front steps that his eyebrow quirks. Giant owl. Okay not too terribly special on its own.

Okay, now that's something.]

She'd never visited it, but she knew where Robin lived, and had passing familiarity with the odd assortment of people who lived with her. It's so strange to arrive and find it dead silent, abandoned. She knocks softly on the door, but there's no answer, of course, so Twilight lets herself in.
The house isn't that different from the pony house. Twilight's not sure what she was expecting to find here, or learn. Everything's fairly bare; she can't even tell what room Robin was living in. She goes to one of them (maybe it's the right one) and just sits quietly for a while. She's not selfish enough to not be happy for Robin -- Twilight knows what it's like to miss your close friends, and she's glad Robin's back with them. But she can't help missing Robin all the same. So she sits, and closes her eyes, and buries her face in her hooves, and just remembers her for a while.
Some time later, Twilight gets up and starts to leave the room. As she does, she gets an idea, and turns back around. Summoning her magic, she creates a small but significant scorch mark on the floor: a six-pointed star with five smaller ones surrounding it.
Nakama. ]
Goodbye, Robin.
