011 [Action/Voice]
[There’s such a depressed pall hanging over Luceti recently. Coming and goings from the village are common, but the disappearances have really taken their toll recently. So many in such a short period of time – mainstays and pillars of the community – just gone and the wave of them does not feel like it has subsided quite yet.
It sucks whatever joy there is to be had from a birthday. And Luceti? Today is one for Trafalgar Law.
He barely remembered. Not that he expects anyone else will. He’s told few and those few are all dealing with their own losses as he’s dealing with his. And with McCoy now gone, there isn’t much time to dwell on anything much as he takes over the other doctor’s share of shifts and sorts through whatever he left and was working on at the Battle Dome clinic.
Maybe it’s for the best no one will probably remember. He is in no mood for a party. But Law takes the day for himself anyway.
You can catch him in the morning around town fetching various things (namely booze), and from eleven thirty onwards into the afternoon at the docks, tending to the Shinonome so she’s ready to sail.
And before the afternoon is done, one 100% filtered message goes out over the journal to Uchiha Itachi:]
Care to join me down at the docks? Dress warmly and you might want to set out Amaya’s dinner for the night… and the next morning. There’s a nice wind tonight for a trip.
[He promised you a sail, remember?]
Oh, and Itachi? Would you bring along a bottle or two of your favorite drink? I figure it’s a night for it.

[Hmm... still would have given you a cat though. Cats are fuzzier and more affectionate in general, and he wasn't going to climb into any nests to find suitable ones. And they imprint. Gotta get them young to work.
Though some of the little owls around here are enchantingly fluffy. And very cute.]
That still sounds like a lot of work. You'd have to raise them from birth. [Yeah... he's still angling for a story.] Got any preferences?
[action]
I'd think it wouldn't be too difficult to guess by now. Or will another genjutsu technique be necessary?
[action]
Only seen you with birds twice, man... so, I guess black? There was a variety around you both times. Your brother didn't give me any specifics either. So based on that...
[...
... why does that word feel a little ominous to him? He sips his sake to mask the feeling.]
Genjutsu? What is that?
[action]
Ganjutsu is the illusionary type of ninja technique. It can make one believe -
[His form suddenly scatters into a mass of crows that go flying in all directions as he continues to speak.]
- that they're seeing things they truly aren't. The Sharingan makes these skills particularly strong in the Uchiha.
[The birds gather back into the seated figure of Itachi, as he hasn't really gone anywhere from the start.]
[action] 1/???
His face as remained like this.
But internally, as the explanation goes on...]
[action]
[action]
[action]
[action]
[action]
And then reaches out with his sense of space to actually get a bead on if there was a man sitting there.]
... aa. Crows. I see.
[No hint of inner turmoil there.]
[action] Done
[Because... he could hear the rustle of feathers and the flapping of of wings... and feel the disturbance of air from their passage.]
[action] *genjustsu
If my abilities weren't as restrained as they are, I could cause someone to experience 72 hours within a single second.
[action]
[That just slipped out, but it's a valid question. Haki is spiritual perception, not mental. He can feel the solidity of the man before him, but, could Devil Fruit powers be tricked as well? Haki?
There could be no defense. No warning. Not even awareness that it was happening.
72 hours. In a single second.
The possibilities are...
horrifying
infinite
... and this is what happened at their first meeting.
And he is being honest.]
[action]
That's a gray area, I believe. Especially as different worlds and people may have different definitions on the subject.
[Which was true enough. His Sharingan sure wore out more than just someone's physical well-being.]
[action]
[His fingers tap against his throat again. The waves are very loud, and it's not just his exceptional hearing.
Affect the soul.
It could go beyond the mental.
With just the mental... with just the five senses being affected - perhaps he couldn't break through it, but he might have been able to circumvent it. It is a perfect moment of clarity; like running water, there is always a way around. Can't dam a river forever. And the solution lies in the unorthodox, the simple, the self. Discard senses. Discard mind. Discard consciousness.
Sink to the clear and unlying perception of the heart and soul.
(Manifest will.)
The world breaks down into its component pieces in front of him. All the different ways to perceive:
- sight, smell, sound, taste, touch-
- the action potential lightning of the nervous system, the mineral earth of bone and tissue, the waters of blood and cellular fluid, the eddying wind of inhalation and exhalation, the fire in midochondria as oxygen is burned for fuel -
- mass and space and time and all the infinite dimensions curled into themselves touching and not touched, spread apart and twisted in, warped to a point (... like Blackbeard is a point.)-
- light and darkness... everything shading in between -
- mind, thought, conscious, unconscious -
Underpinning it all was spirit. Will. Soul.
How do you deal with something that could touch and damage that?
(The act of not doubting)
Like before. Rayleigh couldn't bring him down. He weathered that assault, that domination of spirit. And the Dark King is one of the most powerful of them all. Roger's right hand.
What's needed to survive that is right in front of him.
(Manifest will. The act of not doubting.)
It was all along.]
[action]
There are only three surviving members of the Uchiha Clan. Myself, my brother, and Madara.
Hatake Kakasi has a single Sharingan eye, but he cannot perform the same jutsu with it.
[action]
He slowly nods. Three who can do this. A fourth, outside the clan, (Hatake Kakashi, he will remember that name) with the Sharingan but incapable of that technique.
In the case of Madara, better forewarned and forearmed.]
... I've got to admit, Itachi, that sounds like a terrifyingly effective branch of techniques. Especially that last one. There wouldn't be much one could do to defend from that.
Weather it... maybe. But not defend.
[And let's be honest... if he was attacked by one, it would get messy.]
...
... have I ever told you about Haki?
[action]
[The reason certain measures had been necessary.]
...You may have mentioned it.
[action]
It involves and can affect the soul.
[action]
Possibly not even then.
Re: [action]
...
...
I should tell you what it actually is, first.
[action]
He's listening.]
[action]
Kenbunshoku allow presences to be sensed at great distances, and their level of strength known. You can look inside someone and sense their nature and shifting emotions. Like hearing a voice. And if it's needed, you can perceive their actions before they carry it out. It's precognition of a sort... you see the attack and its possible consequences in all its detail... a bit like your Sharingan in that respect... and have time to evade or counter.
Busoshoku. That one is used for defensive and offense. Defensively it can be used to create a sort of armor to protect the user from attack. Offensively? It can be used to charge weapons to increase the potency of their strikes, sometimes very explosively, or amplify the strength of a fighter's blows.
It can also be used to nullify an opponent's techniques and powers. Even if those powers involved making the user intangible or impervious to normal methods of harm. [Logia]
[A sigh] And then there's Haoshoku...
[action]
The differences in their worlds and the use of these sorts of abilities is truly fascinating.]
[action]
... it can be the most devastating one of the three. Basically what it is is your spirit overrides the other. Crushes it. There is no defense other than having enough of a strong enough will to resist. Even then... [personal experience] it's very unpleasant to fend off.
Generally the victim is knocked unconscious and wakes later physically and mentally wasted.
You can choose your targets [There were certain people in that Auction House that should have been affected.] or dominate everyone in your range [Marineford]. Which could be a lot of souls.
That's the most brute force example of it. There are subtler applications though I haven't really encountered them. Bending the will of creatures to obey you, or influencing others. Their wills, their loyalties...
[It is an observable fact that those with Haoshoku command extreme loyalty from their subjects and nakama, and are forces of charisma that draw all others to them with a sort of gravity that seems in some cases unnatural.
A sip of sake.]
... as I said, it can go deep.
